RIVER & COASTAL MANAGEMENT SERVICES
Strategic Planning
Black & Veatch has an established track record of undertaking high-level strategic
management planning for flood and coastal defense and river basin management. We
consider the full range of issues, including geomorphology, habitats, land uses
and flood defenses. The effects of long-term natural changes are evaluated and monitored
in relation to river and coastal environments. We routinely establish and predict
the impacts associated with changing water levels and flood events. This involves
multidisciplinary studies to address concerns regarding hydrology, drainage, siltation
and the wider environment.
Survey and Assessments
Black & Veatch provides high-level strategic studies, surveys and assessments
to appraise and deliver flood and coastal defense projects to protect people, property
and natural habitat. Assessments involve identifying the most appropriate solution
to a problem, in terms of technical viability, economic justification, environmental
impacts and long-term sustainability. In doing so, we consider both hard and soft
engineering solutions, including the engineering of habitats.
Flood Control
Black & Veatch is responsible for providing consultancy advice and services
in procuring equipment for a proposed flood management system; construction management;
economic benefit analysis; environmental impact assessment; social impact assessment;
and assisting with the strengthening of existing flood management regulations.
Coastal Protection
Black & Veatch brings the resources and commitment to ensure success to coastal
and harbor projects. Our capabilities extend beyond maritime engineering, encompassing
all engineering disciplines as well as environmental science, architecture, finance,
construction and turnkey development. With the right combination of expertise to
handle the varied aspects of coastal and harbor projects, we are well equipped to
ensure that your project is a success, from planning through completion. Services
include permitting; biological monitoring; environmental remediation and mitigation;
sediment transport analysis; dredging design and materials disposal; construction
management/services; erosion control/shore protection; regulatory analysis and agency
negotiations; and harbor and marina planning and design.
River Basin Management
We design sustainable projects for drainage, river, estuarine and coastal environments
and help coastal communities adapt to climate change. Black & Veatch works closely
with developers and planning authorities to protect people and property, guard habitats
and safeguard the wider environment.
Land use and Habitats
Environmental scientists at Black & Veatch can provide expertise on changes
in water quality; soil and topography; flows; sediments; and land use and how they
individually and collectively affect the presence of endangered, protected or exotic
species. We provide an understanding of hydrological patterns and determine which
key ecological driving forces require restoration or preservation, or wetlands conservation
and sustainable management.
Water Management/Integrated Resource Planning
Integrated resource planning (IRP) is a component of the larger concept of Total
Water Management that aims to provide stewardship of resources, manage for sustainable
use, and consider a full range of options. IRP is meant to plan for the long term
in an open and participatory manner. IRP services include assessments of the conjunctive
use of groundwater and surface water, recycling water for irrigation and for groundwater
recharge, and the use of brackish water and desalination.
