Black & Veatch’s Gas, Oil & Chemicals (GOC) business is a world leader in the design and construction of sulfur recovery units and related management facilities, backed by a reputation for delivering long-term value to clients. Our design-to-construction experience covers the complete range of sulfur recovery applications, including gas/liquid treating systems, sour water strippers, and flue gas desulfurization units. Total sulfur production of Black & Veatch-designed units now exceeds 40,000 ltpd. From conceptual process design to optimum selection and configuration, we excel in developing process design packages that incorporate the best-fit technology to meet our clients’ needs. Black & Veatch technology offerings include Conventional Claus Units, CBA Units, BP Amoco Tail gas treating, Cansolv units, MAGG Degas units, SWS.

Natural Gas Liquefaction

Black & Veatch is a world leader in all aspects of natural gas processing – from gas treating and sulfur recovery to NGL recovery and fractionation to LNG. Our Gas, Oil & Chemicals business, formerly The Pritchard Corporation, provides quality design, engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services, delivering to our clients safe and reliable facilities.

With Black & Veatch, you tap into project experience that ranges from 4 MM scfd to over 180 MM scfd, in both domestic and foreign locations. Our PRICO LNG process technology is ideal for producing LNG for peak shaving, vehicle fuel supply and gas distribution systems.

Advantages of our PRICO LNG Process:

  • Economy – The Lowest Capital Cost of All Competing Technologies
  • Simplicity – Single Refrigeration System Needs Minimum Number of Equipment Iitems, and has a Simplified Control System
  • Flexibility – Permits Variation in Feed Gas Composition and Conditions, as well as LNG Product
  • Ease of Operation – Allows for Rapid Startup and Shutdown, and has Minimum Downtime
  • Reliability – Proven Operation; Needs Fewer Operating Personnel

LNG Regasification

LNG import terminals are the link between the world’s natural gas reserves and the growing need for economical and environmentally friendly energy. It is a link that Black & Veatch has been building and strengthening since our involvement in the first LNG terminal built in Korea. An industry pioneer, Black & Veatch was also involved in one of the world’s first LNG facilities, in Algeria in the early 1960s. Since then, we have helped design and build numerous LNG related facilities. Our technical and mechanical design expertise encompasses:

  • LNG Storage Tanks
  • LNG Unloading Systems
  • Low Temperature Equipment and Materials
  • Heat exchange equipment
  • Low Temperature Instrumentation
  • Low Temperature Insulation
  • Cryogenic Piping
  • LNG Pumping
  • Boil-off Gas Systems

With Black & Veatch, you tap into direct experience gained from more than 14 terminal projects, ranging from 100 MM scfd sendout to over 2 BCFD sendout.

Black & Veatch is a Company of Firsts:

  • First LNG Terminal in Korea
  • First Terminal Integrating LNG Vaporization and Power Generation
  • First Offshore LNG Terminal Design for the U.S. Gulf of Mexico
  • First Terminal to get Federal Regulatory Energy Commission (FERC) Permit in the United States, Under Latest Regulations

Gasification

Black & Veatch has been active in gasification since 1980. Black & Veatch has experience in the conceptual design and assessment of a wide variety of coal, petroleum coke, and residual oil gasification processes including production of hydrogen, Fisher-Tropsch transportation fuels, methanol, ammonia, steam, and electricity. Black & Veatch engineered and constructed the Coffeyville Coke Gasification to Fertilizer Plant. Our gasification technology experience, combined with our extensive engineering background in syngas processing, sulfur recovery, power generation and material handling uniquely positions us to deliver:

  • Objective Advice and Superior Consulting Services for Up¬front Analysis, Screening and Project Planning
  • World-Class Capabilities to Effectively Integrate Complex Process Configurations Including Multiple Products

Our record covers technology assessments, feasibility studies, independent assessments, technical advisory services, project designs and EPC for more than 30 gasification clients, using various gasification technologies.

Biogasification

A biorefinery is a facility that integrates biomass (including cellulose materials) conversion processes and equipment to produce fuels, power and chemicals from biomass. The Black & Veatch biorefinery concept is based on a thermochemical conversion platform and focuses on the gasification of biomass feedstocks and the catalytic conversion of the syngas to high value products.

The biorefinery concept is analogous to today's petroleum refineries, which produce multiple fuels and products from petroleum. However, biomass (examples are switchgrass and corn stover) is renewable and better for the environment and national security interests.

Black & Veatch’s biogasification program is developing and implementing a number of processes to create items such as ethanol, methanol, syngas (low Btu fuel gas), heat and power, synthetic natural gas, ammonia, fertilizer, hydrogen and mixed alcohols.
